Classic games to play online

If you are a lover of classic videogames, of retro gaming, surely what I am going to tell you here is going to like you. Can you imagine being able to play vintage video games like Prince Of Persia, Wolfenstein, Warcraft, etc., without having to install any type of emulator? Simply open your web browser, choose the video game you want to play and start your game for FREE. Well that is possible with the PlayClassic page.

On this page you will find an extensive catalog of classic video games from platforms such as the Nintendo, MS-DOS, SEGA, etc. And for this, its creators have launched this online service using a server with several emulators installed so you can run the video game and play from the client, that is, from your operating system with the simple use of a web browser.

Among the emulators that have been used to revive this catalog of retro titles are some as well known as DOSBox, an emulator that is also available for Linux and that allows you to run native software from the Microsoft DOS platform, as you will know if you read LxA, now That is not the first time we talked about him. But other emulators are also used for other platforms, such as the classic consoles that I mentioned earlier.

On the web you can access its menu to go to the different categories, such as the most played, DOS, Windows, consoles such as SEGA, Nintendo NES, SNES, etc. Select the category, use filters to search for the one you want, click on it, and you will be able to see information about the chosen video game and a button that says “Play it online!”, If you click it will start loading the video game, press Play in the box that appears so you can entertain yourself ... It's that simple!

By the way, if you press ENTER the controls are anchored to the window, to release the cursor and to exit, you just have to press ESC.

How to activate and deactivate the dark mode in WhatsApp Web

How to activate and deactivate the dark mode in WhatsApp Web

The fact that our society has evolved to live constantly attached to a screen seems to be an immovable reality. That is why many users are beginning to choose to reduce the impact they cause on our health, largely demanding adaptation to the dark mode of some of the most recurring applications such as WhatsApp.

However, in the specific case of this messaging service, there are many who not only use it through the phone, but also have it present on our computers with WhatsApp Web. That is why this time we want to offer this simple and quick tutorial to activate the dark mode in this application.

How to activate the dark mode in WhatsApp Web

Before starting, we must clarify that there are two methods and differentiated results depending on whether we use the black mode function only for the application itself, or if we use any of the tools or extensions that force in dark mode for the entire browser.

In fact, unlike the already announced and imminent arrival of the dark mode function, in this case we will also use an extension within Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, Stylus, but that will allow us to limit its use exclusively to this chat .

Thus, its installation will be as simple as downloading the extension in our browser (only available for Chrome or Firefox), and installing it. After this, we must download the dark theme to apply, this time a version of WhatsApp Web, and install it.

WhatsApp Web Dark Theme
WhatsApp Web Dark Theme
Once this is done, we will just have to close and reopen the web application to see the changes applied. In addition, in the case of not being satisfied or wanting to return to the classic mode, we will only have to access the options of our browser and deactivate or delete this extension.

Finally, remind you that we are dealing with unofficial extensions and tools, so all responsibility for its use rests with ourselves. Similarly, although it is one of the best solutions we can find today, there is a possibility that we will find some faults during use.

RecordScreen.io

Many times we want to teach someone how to use a platform, or certain parts of a web page, and for this we have to resort to captures, voice notes or video calls in which we are sharing our screen.

RecordScreen.io is a web page that offers us a faster and more convenient way to do it. It works directly with your browser and you will not need to install anything at all.

Any application or tab that you have open

Its operation can not be simpler. Once we enter this web page, we will only have to click on the violet button that says "Record!" to start recording what happens in our browser.

RecordScreen.io
RecordScreen.io

It will give us a choice between two modes: "screen + webcam" or "screen only". We will have to give permission to this web page if we want it to be able to use our camera and microphone, and then it will ask us what content we want to record:

  1. The whole screen
  2. Window of an application
  3. A browser tab

This makes it really useful, since we can quietly record the element we want, without ever seeing what the rest of the applications that are running on our computer.

When we finish recording, we will have the opportunity to watch the video and download it to our team. The clip will be downloaded in .webm format, but the developer says it is already working to implement that can be downloaded in .mp4.

WordPress: 10 good practices in terms of security for websites

WordPress

WordPress (WP) is known as the most popular CMS, among many things, having been designed with emphasis on accessibility, performance, and ease of use, be in continuous development (current version 5.2), have a huge community of users in many languages and have a huge capacity for personalization through the use of themes (themes) and complements (plugins) own or third parties.

Also because it is very safe, but for that, as in any application or system, good practices must be followed to achieve a long-term safe implementation. And in this publication we want to provide some basic recommendations in this regard.

WordPress: 10 good practices in terms of security for websites
WordPress: 10 good practices in terms of security for websites

Introduction

WP, being the most popular CMS to build websites, is also often a frequent target of computer attacks, so apart from its constant updating, it requires frequent maintenance, updating, and securization procedures to avoid weaknesses due to vulnerabilities. in add-ons, weak passwords, obsolete software, among many other reasons, that is, to greatly reduce their vulnerability to any planned or unforeseen attack.

In addition, WP like any other Content Management System (CMS) allows you to quickly and efficiently build a website and then put it online. Their high capacity for work and growth, via modules, supplementary subjects, makes it easier than ever to achieve this task but without the need for the long years of learning that are usually required for this.

However, an unpleasant side effect that may arise from this, it may be that some managers of this tool, usually ignore, the necessary measures to ensure that the website created or maintained is safe. For this, it is important to keep in mind some general and specific measures (good practices), about WP or any other CMS and website to keep it safe.

Good practices

1.- Strengthen your security in general

WP surely surpasses today easily 30% of the base of active websites on the Internet, which makes it a favorite target for invaders and / or attackers (hackers / crackers) with good or bad intentions. Therefore, a vulnerability known and already exploited successfully in a similar site with WP will be attempted in other similar sites with WP.

Strengthen your security in general
Strengthen your security in general
So if you manage and / or use one or several web site (s) with WP, be sure to be more careful, thorough and aware of their online security. Keep in mind that the majority of security breaches analyzed and reported on websites with WP were had little or nothing to do with the core of the application itself, but much to do with everything related to its implementation, configuration and general maintenance, carried out incorrectly by developers or administrators.

2.- Know your vulnerabilities

WordPress has about 4,000 known security vulnerabilities, distributed as follows: WP Core (37%), Add-ons (52%) and Themes (11%), according to a recent report from the WPScans website, now called WPSec ( since 01-05-2019). Investigate the security vulnerabilities that your website faces and look for a solution to solve those problems. Avoid running unsafe versions of the WP Core, or its add-ons and themes.

Focus on the following security issues in your WP or website, that is, in the different types of Attacks:

  • Brute Force: Reinforcing security on your login page.
  • File inclusion: Reinforcing the security of your wp-config.php configuration file.
  • SQL injection: Reinforcing the security of your MySQL database associated with WP.
  • Cross-site scripts: Reinforcing the security of used WP plugins.
  • Malware infection: Reinforcing the general security of your website to prevent unauthorized access, the insertion of malware and the subsequent collection of confidential data by these malicious codes. Malware or most frequent attacks are usually of the type: Backdoor, Spam SEO, HackTool, Mailer, Defacement and Phishing. Seek to protect your site against each of these types of malware or attack.
Remember that once any website is compromised, your SEO ranking may be affected. Since the search engines usually register quickly the violated websites so that, consequently, the navigators indicate to the visitors warning signs or completely block the ability to navigate said sites.

3.- Know the infrastructure of your hosting provider

If your website uses external hosting, that is, hired outside of your infrastructure, do not skimp on costs to ensure the quality of service of your hosting provider. Above all, if it hosts your site under the scheme of "shared hosting".

Because if the "shared hosting" is of low quality you can make your site more vulnerable by being compromised one of the several websites stored on the same server. That is, if a website is hacked into a server with "shared hosting", attackers can also gain access to other websites and their data.

4.- Know the web technical specifications of your hosting provider

When evaluating a hosting provider, your infrastructure is not everything. The technical web specifications used by your hosting provider to achieve better security of the hosted websites is also important. Make sure that it follows the recommended security guidelines for hosting your website:

  • Easy installation of SSL certificates
  • Active management of software versions of the web server.
  • Firewall protection
  • Register of access to the website
  • Routine security audits
  • Malicious activity detection
  • Support for SFTP (not only FTP), TLS 1.2 and 1.3, and for PHP 5.6, at least although it is recommended from 7.0 onwards.
All this is necessary, at least to increase the security of your website with or without WP as CMS used.
Know the web technical specifications of your hosting provider

5.- Beware of the Topics and Complements used

The plugins and themes that are installed matter a lot at the security level. Try to use only official WP themes or add-ons or certified by the Community, from well-known commercial repositories or directly from accredited developers. Since many of them (not certified) may contain malicious code.

It does not matter how much your WP website protects if you are the one installing the malware. Investigate before downloading and installing any theme and add-on, or your developer or promoter website, and have your reservations with free or discounted ones.

6.- Try to update your CMS frequently

Updates to your web platform are very important for your security. Whether WP your CMS or not, obsolete versions of your Core, Theme or add-ons can lead you to harbor known vulnerabilities on your website. In the case of WP that is open source there is a team specifically dedicated to that matter within the Core of the application.

Each security vulnerability discovered in WP is corrected and eliminated immediately in order to solve each new security problem discovered in WP. Because of that, updating WP and all its themes and complements to the latest version is a vital component of a successful security strategy.

7.- I got an adequate password

The quality or strength of our passwords on websites is very important. The login of our websites is a favorite target for exploiting vulnerabilities, because it provides easier access to the administration page of your website.

Brute force attacks are the most common method to exploit your login, discovering the username and password combinations to gain access to the website. In the specific case of WP, by default it is not limited to the number of unsuccessful login attempts that someone can make, therefore, the most advisable is the use of a complex password for the login of your WP administrator.

When choosing a password take into account these 3 fundamental requirements based on the CLU format (Complex, Long, Unique):

  • COMPLEX: The passwords must be as random as possible and least related to the Web Administrator or the Website.
  • LENGTH: Passwords must be 12 or more characters long. And strengthened with restrictions or limitations on the number of failed connection attempts.
  • UNIQUE: Do not reuse passwords. Each password must be unique in time. This simple rule drastically limits the impact of any password that is compromised.
Recommendation: Use a password manager such as "LastPass" (online) and "KeePass 2" (offline) to generate and store all your passwords in an encrypted format.

8.- Always have prepared your anti-disaster plan

If you use WP, remember that it does not have a built-in backup system. Include one as a priority, so you always have an up-to-date backup of your website. Backup copies are critical and a general security strategy to be implemented.

Do not forget that you should not only support your websites and databases used, but all configurations of the entire server through automated tasks with scripts or cloned image systems, to facilitate the necessary restoration and re-installations in the shortest possible time.

Always have prepared your anti-disaster plan
Always have prepared your anti-disaster plan

9.- Increase your security using 2FA

Strengthen your login as a WP administrator or your website through the two-factor authentication mechanism (2FA), which is one of the best ways to secure your website today. Two-factor authentication adds an additional layer of protection to your website login, by requiring that the use of your password requires additional code sensitive to the time of another device, such as your smartphone, to log in correctly. .

In the case of WP that does not offer by default this functionality incorporates the same through the use of an add-on, such as iThemes Security to add it.

10.- Use any necessary security add-on

Most CMS like WP use add-ons to increase their own security potential. In the specific case of WP, it is recommended to use the security plug-in called iThemes Security to add even more protection to your website. This add-on locks WP, repairs known holes, stops automated attacks and strengthens users' credentials.

It has a free version (iThemes Security) and a payment (iThemes Security Pro) that evidently provides more security features such as 2FA, scheduled malware analysis, user registration, among other things.

Conclusion

Whether it's about WP or another CMS, you can avoid most of the security problems of your website simply by following these best or best security practices. Your website deserves and must have implemented the necessary security measures that guarantee or minimize their inviolability in these times so convulsed by the activity of hackers and crackers.

Finally and as an addition, we recommend reading this other article of our blog on the subject to strengthen the security of your website, called: Linux Permissions for Administrators and Systems Developers.

Firefox Premium is very real and will arrive in October

Firefox Premium

Firefox Premium is a new Mozilla project that will offer added services in the search for a new source of funding for the web browser and thereby reduce the enormous financial dependence of Google.

In an interview with the German magazine T3N, the CEO of Mozilla, Chris Beard, confirmed that the project is in the final stages of planning. The forecasts are for a launch in October.

How will Firefox Premium be?

As rumors said, it will be a new subscription service that will offer a set of premium services such as online storage and a VPN to increase the security and privacy of customers on the Internet.

This new version of the browser will be paid, but will also offer a "free level" including some of its features. Neither the prices nor the "level" of the free version have been specified. Recall the association of Mozilla with ProtonVPN to use the network of the Swiss provider in a virtual private network in Firefox.

We assume that Mozilla could offer limited bandwidth for the free and extended version in the paid version. The same with online storage. The standard version will remain as free and free (distributed as open source) as we know so far. Let's clarify that "free" does not necessarily mean "free". There is no payment for the use of software, but for added services, something very common in Open Source developments for companies.

The motivation of Firefox Premium is clear: Mozilla says it is "working to balance its revenue sources" and monetize its developments, the main one, its web browser. The paid version of the browser would be linked to the Search and Content (Pocket).

Recall that searches account for 90% of all revenue from Mozilla and most of them come from Google in a huge dependence that any company (even a nonprofit organization like this) should reduce. That is the goal. And it will not be easy. Yahoo! is dead and buried and Microsoft's Bing - even with advances - is light years ahead of Google Search in positioning and the previous agreement between Microsoft and Mozilla ended badly and some sources see it as one of the causes of the fall of Firefox in market share.

So we ask you to comment on the million dollar question. Would you be willing to pay for a premium version of Firefox? Can Firefox survive in a world monopolized by Google, more than ever after Microsoft's decision to use Chromium in Edge?

Firefox 67.0.1 now prevents websites and advertisers from following you

Firefox

Last year, Mozilla introduced a new feature called Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP), which aims to improve privacy and avoid tracking web activity by attacking cookies.

Cookies, usually stored on the user's device in the form of small text files, allow website developers to store user data to facilitate navigation and enable certain functions.

With its ETP function, Mozilla blocks third-party cookies, that is, cookies placed on the user's computer by the server of a domain independent of the site visited.

These cookies are generally used by advertisers to offer targeted advertising thanks to the advertising profile.

Privacy problems, such as the Cambridge Analytica scandal on Facebook, justify the development of such functions.

Of course, controlling browser cookies does not solve everything, but it can help solve part of the privacy problem by preventing companies from tracking it more easily from one website to another.

About the new version of Firefox 67.0.1

With the arrival of the new version of Firefox 67.0.1, the ETP function will now be enabled by default in all new installations to make it difficult for the users of the browser to track more than a thousand companies when they browse the Internet.

This feature will be enabled by default for new users who install and download Firefox for the first time, enhanced tracking protection is automatically enabled as part of the browser's "Standard" configuration and blocks "third-party tracking cookies."

While for existing users, improved protection against default tracking will be implemented in the coming months. But if you can not wait, you can activate it manually.

Since you can still disable this function or simply disable the blocking of a specific site, as this may cause some sites not to work properly.

Although you can also choose different levels of blocking. Mozilla allows users to choose between different standard, strict and customized options to control their level of online tracking.

Facebook Container is updated
In addition to enabling enhanced tracking protection by default, Mozilla has updated other privacy features.

This is the case of Facebook Container. Launched at the end of March 2018 in response to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, this is a Firefox extension that aims to make it much harder for Facebook to follow you when you're not on your site.

This tool, as the name implies, isolates Facebook from the rest of its web browsing activity, which should prevent the social network from following the user to any part of the web.

Facebook Container is an implementation of the technology of tabs or contextual containers in which Mozilla has been working for several years and whose production was made earlier than expected in response to the growing demand for tools that would help to better adjust the parameters of Confidentiality and security.

The tabs of the container allow browsing under different identities with a reduced risk of tracking, by eliminating the exchange of user personal data between tabs of different "contexts".

With the arrival of this latest Mozilla update to the Firefox 67.0.1 web browser, Facebook Container, which has had more than two million downloads since its launch, prevents Facebook from following you on other sites with integrated Facebook functions, such as "Share" buttons. "I like" that they are implemented in millions of websites.

For example, when you are on a news site and read an article, you often see the "Like" and "Share" buttons on Facebook. The Facebook container will block these buttons and all connections to the Facebook servers, so that the social network can not track your visits to these sites. This blocking makes it much more difficult for Facebook to create user profiles.

Google Chrome 75 arrives with reader mode, authentication PIN and more

Google Chrome 75

Recently Google has just announced the launch of the new version of its web browser Chrome 75 which comes with news and bug fixes, at the same time, a stable version of the free Chromium project is available, which serves as the core of Chrome.

In addition to the innovations and bug fixes in the new version, 42 vulnerabilities identified by the automated testing tools AddressSanitizer, MemorySanitizer, LibFuzzer and the AFL have been corrected.

No critical problems have been identified that allow all levels of browser protection to be bypassed and code executed on the system outside of the sandbox environment.

As part of the cash rewards program for detecting vulnerabilities in the current version, Google paid 13 prizes worth $ 9,000 (a $ 5,000 bonus, two $ 1,000 prizes and four $ 500 prizes).

Main novelties of Chrome 75

With the arrival of this new version of Google Chrome 75 we can find the compatibility with the FIDO CTAP2 PIN. This has been added to the web authentication API to use a user-defined PIN to authorize operations to the keys that support the FIDO CTAP2 protocol.

In the "Advanced" section of the configurator, you can find an element for "Manage security keys", in which you can assign a PIN code to protect the keys placed in the USB drive, as well as the option to reset the key (delete all data and PIN).

Also within the main changes of this new version we will find the Scroll Snap Stop function that has been added to define the adjustment to the elements during page scrolling (for example, a large scroll gesture when selected in the list of images will result in the election not of the last element, but of the following one).

Another new feature that comes in Google Chrome 75 is the arrival of experimental support for reader mode when it is enabled, only significant text and all associated controls, banners, menus, navigation bars and other parts of the page are displayed. are related to the content are hidden.

Enabling support for the new mode is done with the option chrome: // flags / # enable-reader-mode, after which an item appears in the drop-down menu to use it.

In addition to all users of the desktop version, the default strict site isolation mode is enabled, in which the pages of the different hosts are always located in the memory of the different processes, each of which uses its own test area.

The main feature of the strict isolation mode is the division not by tabs, but by domains, that is, if before the contents of the scripts, the iframe and popup files downloaded from other domains were executed in the same process with the base site , now they will be divided into different processes.

Changes in Google Chrome 75 for Android

In the Android version, the interface of the account parameters in the authentication forms has been improved.

Whereupon the tool information block is now displayed directly on the on-screen keyboard and when clicked on it, the possible saved options are displayed instead of the on-screen keyboard, without hiding the entry form.

Other changes added to Chrome 75

Of the other changes that can be highlighted in this new version of Chrome 75 are that in the sidebar of the debugger, separate information is provided on the state of the breakpoints associated with individual parts of complex expressions on the line (breakpoint) online), for example, methods configured in a chain.

Added support for accessing DNS over HTTPS (DoH, DNS over HTTPS) in the experimental versions of Canary, which can be activated in chrome: // flags # dns-over-https.

DoH can be useful to eliminate leaks of information about requested host names through the providers' DNS servers, combat MITM attacks and replace DNS traffic.

How to install Chrome extensions on Android

Chrome extensions on Android
Chrome extensions on Android
One of the biggest advantages of having a browser based on Chromium is to offer its users access to the huge library of extensions available to the Google browser. This is how on the desktop, Vivaldi, Opera and now Microsoft Edge, but we also have the opportunity to differentiate ourselves from Google Chrome.

However, Chrome for Android does not support extensions. However, another browser is well known, but also based on Chrome It has just become one of the first to achieve this feat and now it is possible to install Chrome extensions on Android.

Kiwi Browser

Kiwi Browser
Kiwi Browser
This small browser for Android based on the Chromium engine is a user-independent project arnaud42 from the XDA Developers forums. It is completely free and besides being quite fast, it integrates several interesting functions like blocker for the announcements, the tracking, popups, notifications and even cryptominers, and even has its own dark mode.

From today, its latest version offers support for Chrome extensions. All you need to do is go to the extension page to install it directly or download the .crx file.

You can download the latest version of Kiwi Browser from APK Mirror, or from the Play Store (the latter will take a little longer to update to the one that supports extensions).

How to install Chrome extensions in Kiwi Browser for Android

Once you have installed the browser you just have to run it for the first time and then go to the page of the extension you want to install. Going directly to the Chrome Web Store will leave you with an "unsupported" message, but going to the page of each extension individually works.

We have tested with two of our favorite extensions: Dark Reader and uBlock Origin. Just touch the "Add to Chrome" button as you do from the desktop and you will see the confirmation message appear.

Here they will tell you the permissions that the extension needs and you only have to touch "Accept" to install the extension. Once finished this can happen two things: everything is as it was and your extension is installed, or they send you directly to the configuration page of the extension.

Another important detail to know is that if you enter chrome: // extensions from the URL bar, you can go to the management page of your installed extensions.

And, in addition to this, if you click on the hamburger menu on the left you can directly access the Chrome extensions store without problems.

Now, as noted in XDA, Kiwi supports the import of any extension for Chrome that does not depend on x86 binary code, so not all extensions will work, but a large part yes, it's a matter of testing.

Wave Radio, a community of music lovers in which discovering and sharing music becomes a game

Wave Radio
Wave Radio
Everyone, whether we are hardworking music lovers or occasional musical listeners, we like to discover new music. To expand our musical horizons, delve into unknown genres for us, discover new singers and groups or simply listen to something different from our usual soundtrack. Well that is the main objective of Wave Radio.

Keenen Charles, the creator of this platform, had been thinking for some time about how to offer a way to discover new music that is different from the usual ones. Why? Because most music recommendations, Spotify or other services, usually depend on what we have heard before or what our friends and contacts usually hear.

Discover new music (really) as if it were a game

Wave Radio
Wave Radio

The points play a fundamental role

For each song that a user shares, earn a point. For each listening or I like that song has, the user who has spread it wins another point.

In addition, you will also receive between zero and ten points for the number of visits you get and the same hairpin will be applied depending on the novelty of the published song; if it has been shared few times or not at all, the score received will be higher. That's why the importance of really new music here.

Each week Wave Radio chooses weekly winners that are decided, depending on the points achieved, every week at 12 in the morning (Eastern time) on Friday. The creator of the platform has new options in mind and, in case anyone is curious, he has made his road map in Trello public.
